Moving to DeLand

Moving to Deland

DeLand used to be called Persimmon Hollow, but is now known as the “Athens of Florida,” due to its rich cultural traditions. It is far from being a bustling tourist attraction, which makes it the perfect choice for quiet, family living or peaceful studying at the local university. Whatever your reasons for moving to DeLand, make sure you’re up to speed on everything you’ll need to know before changing your address.

Top Employers

With DeLand being the Volusia county seat, Volusia County government is a key industry. The County Courthouse and the Dept. of Transportation are two of the city’s top employers.

Professors, administrators, and library professionals are proud to work at Stetson University, Florida’s oldest private college. Business Management, Marketing, Psychology, and Visual and Performing Arts are among the most popular majors.

Another top employer (not just in DeLand, but in the entire county) is Covidien, manufacturer of healthcare supplies. With at least 500 employees, this manufacturing giant casts a large shadow in DeLand.

Transportation

DeLand is conveniently located about midway between Orlando and Daytona Beach…perfectly situated between two of Florida’s biggest tourist meccas! Getting around within the city is easy on the Votran bus service, which runs throughout Volusia county.

For travel to Daytona Beach, Orlando, or even outside of Central Florida, the Amtrak station is conveniently located just a few miles away from the city center.

Of course, traveling by car is the most popular choice.

Restaurants

DeLand’s small-town feel has given rise to a number of casual, Southern-style eateries, but you can still find favorites from around the world.

Enjoy gyros, kabobs, and other Greek fare at Santorini. It’s ranked as DeLand’s #1 restaurant on Trip Advisor, so it should be worth a look. For a more upscale, “night out” feel, the critically acclaimed Cress has fresh, delicious options for any palate. In the mood for Mexican? The chefs at De la Vega take a modern spin on classic favorites, such as tamales, enchiladas, and paella. And for an authentic Italian deli experience, Manzano’s has sandwiches, paninis, and salads that everyone will love.

Shopping

Disney’s Main Street U.S.A. may get more visitors, but there are just as many things to enjoy at Main Street DeLand. Although it’s officially known as Woodland Blvd., this shopping district has a definite “main street” vibe that attracts locals as well as day-trippers from around Central Florida. Shop at any of the unique boutiques along the main drag, enjoy a quick bite at a cafe, or join in the many festivities that happen throughout the year. Art exhibits, farmer’s markets, craft shows, and live music are frequent (and lively) and the Festival of the Arts—held annually in November—is an event locals look forward to all year.

Things to Do

It may not be a well-known spot for tourists, but that doesn’t mean DeLand can’t loosen up and have some fun. No matter what interests your family, you’ll find plenty of options for fun.

Hontoon Island State Park – Accessible only by ferry or private boat, Hontoon Island is a quiet oasis where you can enjoy nature or explore the history of Florida.

Museum of Art – Deland’s art museum features a rotating series of spectacular exhibits as well as a sculpture walk for an artsy stroll in the beautiful Florida weather.

Athens Theatre – Capitalizing on DeLand’s reputation as the “Athens of Florida,” the historic Athens Theatre is a popular spot to see the best plays, musicals, and dance productions DeLand has to offer.

Skydiving – Don’t let DeLand’s small town atmosphere fool you, the residents also know a thing or two about adrenaline. DeLand has been called the skydiving capital of the world! If you’re brave enough, moving to DeLand may be the perfect excuse to cross this off your bucket list!
