5 Moving Fears (and How to Overcome Them)

5 Moving Fears and How to Overcome Them

Witches, ghouls, things that go bump in the night…to some people, none of these frights hold a candle to tropophobia—the fear of moving or making changes.

There’s no doubt about it, despite the many good reasons you have for moving, the stress and anxiety surrounding it can sometimes take all the fun out a lifestyle change. But with a few helpful hints, you can face your moving fears and get on that truck with confidence and excitement.

1. I’ll break/lose something.

The fear of losing or breaking something precious is enough to make even the most adventurous soul put down roots forever. But you don’t have to live in fear! Proper packing and moving techniques can save you from most accidents. (Haphazardly throwing things in a box and giving them to your absent-minded nephew to load onto the truck? Not so wise.) Keeping an inventory list (the more organized the better) will help keep track of even the smallest knick knacks from Point A to Point B.

Sound like too much work? Professional movers not only have the muscles and knowledge to pack and move your items safely, they can provide you with moving insurance in case the unthinkable does happen. (Can your nephew do that?)

2. My friends will suddenly have “other plans.”

You’d like to hope your friends will be there when you need them, but as calendars fill up, it becomes harder and harder to get everyone in the same place (especially when you need them to work). Hiring a crew such as Cento Family Moving will ensure that you have experienced, professional movers on hand when you need them.

If you decide to put your trust in your flaky friends, make sure you allow plenty of time to complete the move (that is, assume you’ll be doing it yourself and don’t rely on your friends to get it done).

3. It takes too long.

broken clockWhile it depends on the size of your home and the amount of boxes and furniture you have, moving into a new home can take a day or more. But if the thought of moving boxes and couches all day is too daunting, you can always delegate the task to a professional moving crew. (They do this every day, so they’re in and out in no time!)

If you choose to use friends and family, try to be strategic about your move. Pack early and label all boxes with the room they go in. When loading things onto the truck, first load things that will come off the truck last and vice versa. This will save you stress at your destination.

4. I’ll injure myself trying to lift my couches.

Sectionals, pool tables, chandeliers…some things are best left to the pros! Professional moving crews have the muscles, knowledge, and equipment needed to move the heaviest pieces without injury to themselves (or your belongings).

If you forego the moving crew, make sure you lift with caution (from the legs!) and don’t try to take on more than you can handle. It may also be worth asking a moving company to move just the big items, leaving the smaller cardboard boxes for you and your family to move.

5. I’ll miss my old neighborhood. / I won’t like my new place.

lonelyIf you’re lucky, you’ll move because you want to. But if you’re moving for work, school, or otherwise “against your will,” it can be hard to leave everything and everyone you’re used to. Start by embracing the change. Chances are, there’s at least one thing you’re looking forward to about your new house or city. Focus on the reasons why you’re picking up and relocating.

Next, make sure you familiarize yourself with your new neighborhood. Find a great local restaurant, a cool coffee shop, or even a pretty park that will make the new house feel like home. (This is also a great way to make new friends.)

Lastly, make sure you still keep in touch with your close friends and family back home. Social media, video calls, emails, and occasional visits will help you feel close to home.
